Beautiful and informative,
September 30, 2000
Reviewer: Frank Behrens from Keene, NH USA |
There are simply too many videos available
on tape and DVD in which relaxing but shapeless electronic
music is being played as the visuals show waves against
a beach or some such monotonous albeit beautiful pattern.
At first I was afraid that
on AlphaDVD label would be one of the same. It is not. Even
without the special features, the views of the universe
are utterly breathtaking. The music by a group called 2002
is equally utterly negligible, but that turns out to be
a virtue.
When I hit the Title button on my remote,
I programmed in the narration; and suddenly the item became
a wonderful educational tool, actually enhanced by the musical
background. For those who wish, there are narration tracks
in French, German and Spanish; or you might prefer subtitles
in the same linguistic choices. The video is widescreen,
the sound superb.
This would make the perfect gift for
a friend and especially to a student.

As DVD technology advances, it
is inevitable that companies are develop more and more
programs that make use of the interactivity of the formant, as
well as those that cater to more specific markets. StarGaze:
Hubble's View of the Universe is one such program
that actually delivers on what is promises, and delivers it
well
the packaging simply suggests the opportunity to view
images from the Hubble Space Telescope, accompanied by a
musical score, and that it is
but with a bit more depth. The
presentation of the material is what makes it more interesting
than it sounds, but in all honesty, if the fields of astronomy
and cosmology are of no interest to you, then I have to
recommend that you pass up on this one. If, on the other hand,
you've ever found yourself watching the NASA channel into the
wee hours of the morning (of that, I am guilty) then I have no
problem suggesting that you give this one a try.

If
you are a fan of IMAX programs or one who enjoys details about
the vast reaches of space, you will very likely find this to
be a fascinating one hour program. For those who enjoy
relaxing music as well, this could probably function as good
background music while you work or go about your day.

Fans of outer space will be
amazed at the images presented here which were captured with
the Hubble Space Telescope. Featuring over an hour of footage,
as well as original music by 2002 and a choice of three
high-fidelity audio tracks, this title is an excellent choice
for the whole family. Ideal as a relaxation tape, or for
teaching children about the cosmos, or for those who love
outer space and/or telescopes, this can't fail at charming
everyone who sees even a few minutes of it. One of those rare
titles that can be enjoyed repeatedly, this is an excellent
choice for yourself or as a holiday gift for anyone on your

StarGaze - Hubble's View Of The
Universe is an incredibly
stunning visual and audio delight, demonstrating just an
infinitesimally small number of the cosmic wonders that are
out there waiting for us to visit. The sheer quality of the
presentation is almost overwhelming and the whole package is
extremely well done (barring what would appear to be a few
glitches). This is a wonder that everyone needs to behold and
I cannot urge you enough to go out and indulge in this DVD. A
magnificent achievement.

It’s a widescreen set of
pans across cosmic spacescapes that are achingly beautiful,
the sort of images you could imagine having been created by
the best space artists – or the mind of someone on a heavy
duty acid trip.

STARGAZE: HUBBLE'S VIEW OF
THE UNIVERSE is one of
the coolest image and music titles to be released on DVD
because this disc offers viewers more than beautiful pictures
and impressive sound. This program also takes advantage of the
multi soundtrack capabilities of the DVD format to provide
narration for the awe-inspiring visuals in four separate
languages
but I am getting ahead of myself.

Business - October 2000
Final Frontier - When users push
"play" on StarGaze they're sure to be mesmerized by
the phenomenally clear images of stars, galaxies and
who-knows-what celestial bodies photographed by the Hubble
Space Telescope. The beautiful footage was accompanied
by soothing and mood-setting New Age-styled vocal/keyboard
orchestrations by the band 2002and if that were that it would
still be an excellent disc. Although the visual splendor
works best, the educational aspect of the disc is increased immensely
with the inclusion of informative narration, subtitles and
menus in four languages, TV screensavers and DVD-ROM
features. The starts of this show are the stars - it's
bewildering to think about what's out there and, as the disc
states, we're only seeing the tiniest fraction of it. -

Review - January 2000
The Dolby® Digital and DTS®
Digital Surround™ 5.1-channel discrete soundtracks are very
nicely recorded, and deliver, an expansive, immersive sonic
experience though the music. The DTS version is the preferred
listening experience, by virtue of a spacious presence that
seems more lively and coherent, along with slightly greater
depth in the low-end. For wonderfully recorded, atmospheric
surround sound music and stunning astronomical visuals, this
DVD is not be missed.
